In 1852, Mahala G. Denney , then 11 years old, headed for Oregon from Ohio in a wagon train crossing the Great Plains. Her parents were Christen and Elizabeth [Eliza] [Nickerson] Denney and their five other children: Laura, Sarah, Owen, John and Prestly.

Her father died in 1852 shortly after the family arrived in Lebanon, Linn County, Oregon. They had come to claim good farm land by acquiring an 'Oregon Donation Land Claim' that was created by the United States Congress to help establish the right to this West Coast property, keeping the British at bay. Oregon City was made the seat of Federal Government, on the West Coast.

Mahala G. Denney and Benjamin Pike were married, in 1871, and setup residence in Umatilla County, Oregon. They later relocated to Sherman County, Oregon. In 1908, Mahala, moved to Newberg, Yamhill County, Oregon. Where she spent the rest of her life.

Very involved in civil and local matters. She was especially involved in the women's relief corp as her husband served in the Civil War.
