He was the son of Thomas and Anna (Banks) Gibb, both natives of Scotland. Allan emigrated 1909, naturalized in 1919. He was a house carpenter in Ames. He married Mary "Polly" Trow.
They had these three sons:
1. Charles, born about 1918.
2. Allan Banks, Jr., born about 1921, wed Maxine Sutter
3. Edward, born about 1923.

His youngest son lost his life serving in North Africa during World War II.
