Maria Petronella de Jager, age 85, passed away peacefully at her home in San Bruno on September 3, 2017.

Maria was born in Scheveningen, Holland on July 24, 1932 the daughter of Andreas and Petronella Zeh. She would move to Amsterdam as a young child and survive the German occupation of her homeland during World War II before meeting the love of her life, Leendert "Leo" de Jager. The two were united in marriage on January 20, 1955 in Amsterdam, Holland. He preceded her in death January 24, 2007. They were married for 52 blissful years.

A consummate mother and homemaker, Maria was an excellent cook, seamstress and cherisher of plants. She was happiest when reminiscing about her childhood growing up in Europe and her many adventures with husband Leo and their five young children. She also loved watching her favorite soap operas General Hospital and The Young and the Restless to which she credits for teaching her how to speak English. She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed routing on all the Bay area teams. She had an unmatched love for all animals, adopting many pets throughout her life, and lovingly caring for (some say spoiled) dog Chico and cat Bootsie until her end of days. She will be forever missed for her sharp wit, her gift of gab and the most amazing meatballs and croquettes her grandchildren ever ate.

Maria is survived by her sons Robert and Jeff and his wife Dyan, and twin daughters Yvonne and Paula. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, Leo Jr., Jessie, Samantha, Mick, Brooke, Michael, Ashley, Robbie, Avrie, Jax and six great-grandchildren Christine, Donnie, Tuff, Jayden, Jacob and Jonathan.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by oldest son, Leo in 2013, a sister Francisca Wilhemina Voskes and a brother Andreas Theodous Zeh.

Friends and family are welcome to a visitation from 2 to 4 pm, Sunday, September 10, 2017 at the CHAPEL OF THE HIGHLANDS, El Camino Real at 194 Millwood Drive in Millbrae. Funeral Services for Maria de Jager will be at 11:00 am, Monday, September 11, 2017 at the CHAPEL OF THE HIGHLANDS. Entombment will follow at Cypress Lawn Memorial Park in Colma. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Maria's honor to The Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA, 1450 Rollins Road, Burlingame, CA 94010.
