He graduated from Rosewood High School and furthered his education at North Carolina State University, where he was nicknamed "Sut". There he was active in track, freshman football, and boxing. He was in the Agriculture Club, Science Club, R.O.T. C., and Secretary for the Self Help Club. He was Vice President of Leazar Literary Society, Grange; Animal Husbandry Club, and Student Council. He graduated in 1932 with a B.S. Degree in Agriculture and Engineering. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Pine Burr honorary fraternities.
At the age of 26, he married Mary Irene Snipes, on January 30, 1937. The marriage was solemized at Edenton Street Methodist Church in Raleigh, N.C. To this union, they had three children. They were married for 18 years before she passed away in 1955. He married a second, Mary Louise Morrison McColl, to a widower who had three children who were all close in age to his own. In fact, almost of them were in college at the same time.
After college, he worked as the Superintendent of the farms of State Hosptial. He then started his own business with Mobile Milling Service Inc..
