Eric de Burgh served in the Boer War as a teenager, joined the Indian Army in 1904, won a DSO in 1916. He rose steadily through the ranks to become General of the British Army in India in 1939.

He was a 2nd lieutenant beginning on 28 Jan 1903 and then joined the Indian Army on 28 July 1904. He won a series of promotions, rising to the rank of major on 27 May 1916. He won another promotion as lieutenant colonel during the second half of 1917 through 7 March 1919. He served as a Brig. Major in the 3rd Cavalry in the British Expeditionary Forcei n France and was a general staff officer. He continued as a GSO in the 2nd and 3rd cavalries in France through 12 May 1918. On 10 Aug 1918 he was assigned GSO to the Indian Army and remained in that position until 27 Feb 1922.

Eric de Burgh was the son of L.t Col. Thomas John de Burgh (1851–1931) and Emily Anne Fock de Roebeck (1857–1913).
