Son of Stephen and Sylvia Williams, a descendant of James Williams of Scituate, Rhode Island, apparently an officer in the Revolutionary War who, with other soldiers from nearby RI towns, was granted land in Lyndon, Vermont.

On 13 May 1856 Silas, 22, married Miriam Holbrook, 18, daughter of Luther and Mary Ann Daniels (Flagg) Holbrook, at Mendon, Worcester County, Massachusetts; she was the widow Evans at the time.

On 22 Jan 1862 Silas, a bootmaker, mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He was 28 years, 3 months and 19 days old.

He was wounded by a shot in the right arm, according to his pension file on 17 Sep 1862 at The Battle of Antietam.

On 24 Jan 1863 Silas ended military service with the 15th Massachusetts due to disability.

Silas and Miriam were enumerated in the 1900 US Federal census on 13 Jun 1900 at Bellingham, Massachusetts, where he is retired. Of their six children, four are still living.

Silas died on 23 Aug 1903 at Wheelock, Caledonia County, Vermont, and the record was registered in Bellingham, MA. He was 69 years, 10 months and 20 days old.

On 22 Sep 1903 Miriam, his wife, received a widow's pension based on Silas's service.

Miriam, his wife, outlived Silas and died on 3 Feb 1931 at Bellingham, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.
