A Civil War envelope from Capt. Robert Stuart Wier to E.K.(Edward Kennedy) Jones (1833-1910), Enterprise, Mississippi, sold at auction. (FindAGrave 28818864)

Wier Family History by his uncle Rev. William W. Wier, said, "Robert Stuart Wier, born August 5, 1829. Removed to Enterprise, Mississippi. Here he raised the 'Enterprise Guards,' and was the first in Mississippi to volunteer in the late war. Died in camp near Bowling Green, Kentucky on January 6, 1862."
The Enterprise Guards, Company B, 14th Mississippi Infantry, was raised by Capt. Robert Stuart Wier (second cousin of Norris Lewis's mother), was the first Mississippi unit to volunteer in the Civil War, April 18, 1861.

Catalog description: "Union City Tennessee, 38mm circle postmark with negative negative letters and Paid 5 circled handstamp on cover addressed to Enterprise, Miss.

Blue imprint at left: Capt. R.S. Wier / Enterprise Guards, / Regiment, Mississippi Volunteers and matching verse at right: The Enterprise Boys are in the field, / Away down South in Dixie's Land, / And never, no never intend to yield, / While there is one of the Gallant band!

The cover has been reduced and has top corners patched as shown.

Rare in any condition! The CSA catalog values the postmark at $500. The regimental imprint and verse may well be unique.

(from the Family Search site): 14th Infantry Regiment [also called Beauregard Rifles] was organized at Jackson, Mississippi, in October, 1861. The men were from the counties of Clarke, Oktibbeha, Lauderdale, Winston, Lowndes, Monroe, and Tishomingo. Captured at Fort Donelson, Tennessee in February, 1862. After being exchanged, it was attached to Tilghman's and Gregg's Brigade, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. A detachment was captured when Vicksburg fell in July, 1863. The unit surrendered with no officers and 40 men."
