On 16 Dec 1864, David H. Thomas, policeman employed by the village of Niagara City (Suspension Bridge), now part of the City of Niagara Falls, apprehended the Confederate spy and guerilla James Yates Beall. The event is commemorated by a historical marker at the Niagara Falls, NY Amtrak Station. The marker may be viewed here:

He died alone at age 60, killed by an undetermined accident in a railyard, as an employee of the railroad. His body was creamated - a still new and novel practice at the time.
