Melvin L. Peters, 88 of Beatrice, died Sunday morning, September 3, 2017 in Lincoln. He was born on July 1, 1929 at Beatrice. He attended St. Michael’s Elementary School in Fairbury and graduated from Fairbury High School in 1947. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1950 and was stationed in Korea and received the Purple Heart. After his discharge he married Joan Fisher on June 16, 1952 at Colorado Springs, CO. They lived in Beatrice while he worked at Store Kraft in shipping and was the production controller before retiring in 1994. He was a life-time member of the Geddes-Thober Post #1077 of the Beatrice VFW, Eagles Aerie #531 of Beatrice, and was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Beatrice where he had served as a lector. He enjoyed calling Bingo at the Eagles for over 30 years.

Survivors include his wife Joan Peters of Beatrice; four sons, Gary (Rachelle) Peters of Hastings, Terry (Cathie) Peters of Beatrice, Brian Peters of Wichita, KS and Scott (Charlene) Peters of Lincoln; three daughters, Susan Smith and Vicki (Galen) Trecek all of Hickman, and Lisa Borgman of Lincoln; 21 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Leo (Jan) Peters of Sutherlin, OR and Bernard (Marilyn) Peters of Denver; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Mary Brandt Peters, two brothers, and two sisters.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, September 8, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Robert Barnhill and Father Thomas McGuire co-celebrants. Burial will be at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery of Beatrice. Military graveside honors will be conducted by Bitting-Norman Post #27 of the Beatrice American Legion and the U.S. Army. The family will meet and greet relatives and friends Thursday, September 7, from 6:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. with a Rosary service to follow at 7:00 P.M. at the Fox Funeral Home. A memorial has been established to the Alzheimer’s Association and the Tabitha at Williamsburg/Seagren House of Lincoln. The body will lie in state at the Fox Funeral Home from 1:30 P.M.
