Spc. Shawn Rankinen of Independence, Mo., attended Truman High School and Johnson County Community College. Shawn enjoyed karate and spent a lot of time working out at the gym, running track and swimming. He worked as a graphic artist while he was in high school. He was a member of Country Meadows Baptist Church. He joined the United Stated Navy in 1999 and entered boot camp at Great Lakes, IL and then was stationed in Norfolk, VA. He served on the USS Enterprise and the Iwo Jima LHD. He was also a helicopter mechanic. He then joined the United States Army in August 2006 and was stationed in Ft. Hood, TX and later went to serve in Iraq. He had been in Iraq for one week has been killed in a roadside bombing. He enlisted in the Army August 2006 after spending six years in the Navy. He was preceded in death by his father Robert E. Rankinen and brother Dale Carlson. He was 28.
