William R Murphy, 85, of Union, Oregon died August 27, 2017 at Grande Ronde Hospital in LaGrande, Oregon. He had also resided in Crescent City, California, Brookings, Oregon, Kodiak and Kenai, Alaska.

William was born February 28, 1932, in Woodville, Idaho, to Emmet and Gladys (Cousin) Murphy. William attended Pierce Park School in Boise, Idaho, as well as junior high. He attended Del Norte High School in Crescent City, CA, and continued on to earn his GED in Brookings, OR.

On June 30, 1951 William married Nancy Lou Babcock, who suddenly passed away following the birth of their third son on May 9, 1955. On December 24, 1955, he married Ruth Ina Hassett Later.

William (Bill) was employed by West Coast Telephone Company as a member of the line crew in October 1950, and retired as their station man in charge of outside plant operations in the Brookings, OR area after more than 22 years of service. Bill subsequently moved to Alaska with Ruth, and their son, where he went back to work doing what he loved, working as a telephone lineman until June 1987, when Bill and Ruth made their home in Union, Oregon.

Bill enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, John Wayne Movies, riding horses (while helping out on his friend's cattle ranch), woodworking, time with his family, and playing with his grandchildren. He was also a talented story teller.

Bill was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served as a bishop and was a high priest.

Bill was also a member of the Rotary Club, Moose Lodge and was a volunteer with the Brookings Fire Department where he became the assistant fire chief. Bill received the Fire Fighter of the Year Award in 1969 while at Brookings.

He was preceded in death by his parents, who died in a train/car collision in 1960 when Bill was only 28 years old; son Timothy I Murphy; brothers Darrell, LaVon and Sherman; sister Donna Rowland; wives Nancy Murphy, and Ruth Murphy, in 2007.

He is survived by four sons, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and his younger sister who was his companion and caregiver.
