Rocco L. Flaminio, 80, of Washington Township died Wednesday (Jan. 12, 2005) in his home.

Born Oct. 19, 1924, in Saltsburg, he lived in the Kiski Valley most of his life.

A Marine Corps veteran, he served in Iwo Jima, Okinawa and the Phillippines during World War II, earning the Purple Heart and Silver Star. He also was a reservist during the Korean War, earning the Korean Service Medal. He set up the distant early warning lines in Alaska in 1953 and communication lines in Vietnam from 1966-1969.

Mr. Flaminio co-founded and was vice chairman and chief technical officer of Tollgrade Communications, Harmar, in 1988, where he helped develop testing products for monitoring television cable lines. Before that, he was a transmission engineer for Bell Telephone, Pittsburgh, retiring in 1988 as a senior engineer.

He was a member of St. Gertrude Roman Catholic Church and past commandor of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, both in Vandergrift.

Mr. Flaminio was an avid sports fan, especially enjoying the Steelers, Pirates and Penguins.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth M. Pieples Flaminio; two daughters, Christina J. (Charles L.) Canton of Chevy Chase, Md., and Nancy F. (William A.) Meagher of Cape Cod, Mass.; six grandchildren; and two brothers, Thomas (Marvyl) Flaminio of Saltsburg and Herman (Frieda) Flamino of Wexford.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas L. and Julia Antenucci Flaminio.

Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the BRADY-CURRAN FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICES INC., 429 Franklin Ave., Vandergrift. Christian Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Gertrude Roman Catholic Church by the Rev. Chad Ficorilli. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell. Military honors will be accorded by Vandergrift Veterans Honor Guard.
