Son of Thomas Savage Clay and Matilda Willis McAllister, Thomas Carolin Clay was born at Richmond, Bryan County, GA. He was educated at Hopkins Grammar School in New Haven, CT (1855-1857), then studied classics in Middletown, CT under Henry Martyn Colton. He entered Yale College as a member of the Class of 1864. Sadly, he had to return to Georgia upon secession, and never graduated. He enlisted as a Private in the Liberty Independent Troop in 1862, which became part of Company G, 5th GA Regt. of Cavalry. On November 1, 1864, he married Caroline Matilda Law, daughter of Judge William Law and Althea Jones Stark. After the war, he attempted to plant rice in Bryan County, and took various positions in Savannah.
