~ Deacon Francis Eliott/Eliot~
Birthdate:10 April 1615
Birthplace: Nazeing, Essex, England
Death: 17 January 1677 - Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States of America
Freeman: 1641
Ordained Deacon
Burial: 30 Oct 1677, Braintree, Norfolk.

Bio:
Francis came from England to America before 29 Jan 1638 when he was granted land in Braintree by the town of Boston. He came as a planter to Braintree. He listed four persons in his family at that time and received four acres for each, or a total of 16. Francis's name appears on the Braintree records a number of times, especially with regard to land transfers. He was made a freeman in 1641 and was a Deacon 12 Oct 1652. He also assisted his famous brother, John Eliot, in his Indian missionary work for which he was paid. He became a schoolmaster to the Indians under his brother at about 1650. His will is dated 20 Oct 1677. His inventory was taken 29 Oct., pres. 13 Nov. 1677 by his widow Mary.
Mary lived as a widow for almost 20 years. Mary died on 17 Jan 1697

Francis was the little brother to the more famous sibling, John Eliot (Eliot spelled a variety of ways - with one or two "l"s and/or one or two "t"s being the most common). He is listed in the book, "Genealogy of the Descendants of John Eliot..." (see Sources - page 7). According to this source, Francis (and of course his brother John) was the son of Bennett Elliot and his wife Letteye (her name was spelled a variety of ways). The parents of Francis and John were married in 1598 and had four children baptized at St. John the Baptist Church in Widford, Hertfordshire County, England. Widford is a city just north of London. At the time, St. John the Baptist Church was the only church in Widford, and their records go back to 1558. Then, according to the author, the family moved to Nazeing, Essex County, where three more children were born, including Francis. Hertford and Essex counties share a border, and Nazeing is also north of London.

His brother Philip Eliot has his own entry in the gold standard of all reference books for early New England settlers, The Great Migration and The Great Migration Begins, 1620-1635. According to this source, Philip was in Roxbury by 1635. His brothers John, Jacob, and Francis are mentioned on page 416, as well as sisters Sarah, Lydia, and Mary. Christening records for all the siblings are given.

Jacob also has a listing in The Great Migration series, which mentions Francis (see page 627). It does not, however, appear that all of the Eliot siblings came to Massachusetts at the same time. Some may have come as early as 1631, and others, like Francis, perhaps somewhat later. Francis is listed as a resident landowner of Braintree as early as 1640, so we know he was in Massachusetts by this time. There is no record of his marriage, but he likely married about this time, as his oldest daughter was born in 1640.

John also has an entry in The Great Migration series.

Francis is generally associated with the town of Braintree, where he may have lived most of the time he was in Massachusetts. Braintree was founded on land first colonized in 1625 by Captain Wollaston, and initially named Mount Wollaston. Under the rule of Thomas Morton it was renamed Merry Mount. The area was resettled and incorporated as the town of Braintree, named after the English town of Braintree in 1640, on land which is now part of the current town of Braintree, from which Randolph, Holbrook, the City of Quincy, and part of Milton were split off. Suffolk County was created by the Massachusetts General Court on May 10, 1643, when it was ordered: "that the whole plantation within this jurisdiction be divided into four shires". Suffolk initially contained Boston, Roxbury, Dorchester, Dedham, Braintree, Weymouth, and Hingham. Many years later, in 1793, most of the original Suffolk County (including Milton) except for Boston, Chelsea, Hingham, and Hull (which remained in Suffolk) split off and became Norfolk County. But while Francis was alive Braintree was part of Suffolk County, and it is here we look for land records related to him.

According to the genealogy of John Eliot mentioned above, Francis married Mary Saunders daughter of Martin Saunders. There also appears to be primary evidence of this fact; see agreement attached under Sources between Francis Eliott and John Sanders on the one part and Elizabeth Bridge, once the wife of Martin Saunders, deceased, on the other. It was dated 1658 and registered in 1659. Francis Eliot's name is spelled 4 different ways in this single document.
