Richard Leland Bacon
December 4, 1928-August 31, 2017

Richard Leland Bacon was born December 4, 1928 in Charleston, Illinois and was the eldest of five children born to Leland and Ruby Bacon. He passed away peacefully at the age of 88 in Cabool, Missouri on Thursday August 31, 2017 with family by his side. As a young boy, his family of seven moved to Decatur, Illinois and he went on to high school there. His father was a concert violinist and Richard also played the violin and bass fiddle. He was part of a group who played gigs around Illinois. Richard enlisted into the Marine Corps in 1949. He was in the 1st Marine Division at the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea. One of the "Brotherhood of the Chosin Frozen" and "Chosin Few" honored in 2011 at the 1st Marine Division's 70th Anniversary. After his military days, Richard married and moved to San Diego here he was an aircraft worker for several years. He ultimately went on to become a barber and was a very talented hairdresser. He enjoyed his work and being around his clients. He also became an Instructor of Cosmetology at San Diego City College. Richard was a very creative person and full of ideas and he always carried a small pad and pen at the ready to jot down something that was important to him. He actually was a pretty good artist as he painted for a time and even built a bass fiddle for his young son. During the 1960's he rode a BSA motorcycle to work and also enjoyed riding off-road now and again. He looked so handsome with his dark hair and mustache, riding down the road wearing his leather jacket. He had some very good times. In 1996, he and his wife Diane retired to Cabool, Missouri where they had a large property in the country. There he raised goats, chickens and he ultimately got into beekeeping. At that time, staying with his musical roots, he took up playing the electric bass guitar and the ukulele. He also enjoyed working crossword and Sudoku puzzles. Richard had a great sense of humor and he enjoyed sharing jokes and humorous stories. He knew how to make things light when times were tough and helped lighten the way. He was predeceased by his parents and sister Joanne. Richard is survived by his loving wife Diane Bacon, daughters Lee Lecuru, Diane Bacon, Claudette Noorlun, Leslie Edwards and sons, Richard Bacon, Joseph Bacon, Christopher Bacon, Paul Bacon and Mark Cote. Also by sisters Jean Britt, Carol Morgret, brothers Carl Bacon and James Farris, 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren plus many nieces and nephews. Services are pending.
