Jean Anselme Séraphin Ruel, son of Anselme Ruel and Anastasie Gosselin, was born and baptized on 14 Jan 1847 at Saint Charles, Bellechasse, Québec, Canada. He married Sophie Larochelle about 1871. Their first child was born in Manchester, Hillsborough, New Hampshire, after which the couple returned to Canada. The family settled in Sherbrooke, Sherbrooke, Québec, where most of their children were born. After the 1885 birth of daughter Amanda, the family returned to the United States, settling in Massachusetts, first in Berkshire County, and later in Hampden County. Séraphin and Sophie were the parents of eleven children, eight of whom survived to adulthood. Anselme Séraphin Ruel died in Springfield at the age of 73.
