Lewis L. Wilson 85 of Grandview Drive Cobleskill, NY died Wednesday, August 23rd at home under the loving and longtime care of his daughters and hospice.

Lew was born January 26, 1932 in Cobleskill, NY a son of Clarence and Odella (Walker) Wilson and was raised by his foster family, Ralph and “Lottie” Sharpe in East Cobleskill. He graduated Valedictorian of his class from the former Cobleskill High School and later, began a long career operating Fire Mark Insurance Agency and Lewis L. Wilson Insurance in Cobleskill along with Wilson Telephone Exchange, and Wilson Travel. Mr. Wilson also served in the Army Reserve Unit 389th Infantry Heavy Motor in Schenectady for 11 years. An active civic member, Lew served as Chairman of the Schoharie County Republican Committee, the Schoharie County Commissioner of Elections, served on the Executive Committee of NYS Republican Party, a Delegate of the NY State Convention and a Delegate to the 1984, 1988, 2000 and 2004 National Republican Convention. He also served on many local organizations and professional insurance affiliations including NYS and national PIA, the Cobleskill Rotary Club, President and board member of Community Hospital of Schoharie County where he also served as chairman of the 1.5 million fundraising project. He was President of Cobleskill Cemetery Association, Director on the board of Catskill Area Hospice, Treasurer and day to day manager of Kathan Kamps, Chairman of the Firehouse Fund Drive, member of the Cobleskill United Methodist Church and President of Redington Ambassador Resort in Fl. Lew was also a life member of the American Legion Post #57 and Cobleskill Eagles Aerie #2695. He received many honors, awards and recognitions including Lifetime Achievement for NYS PIA in 2015, Who’s Who awards, NYS Insurance Dep’t and National PIAPAC Person of the Year in 1996.

He married Barbara K. “Bobbie” (Kathan) Wilson on June 7, 1952. She predeceased him on December 2, 2016. Together, they enjoyed traveling and spending time at their camp at Sacandaga Lake. Lew also enjoyed collecting Fire Marks and Fire Memorabilia, flying his plane, woodworking and fishing.

Survivors include his daughters; Susan W. Coleman of Garrattsville and Joan “Jodie” W. (John) Boucher of Lake George, two grandchildren; Scott L. (Michelle) Coleman and Emma K. Boucher, two great-grandchildren; Scotty and Jaxon, and several nieces and nephews along with his foster family. He was predeceased by his son Peter L. Wilson, his 6 brothers and 2 sisters from his Wilson family and his foster siblings Kenneth Sharpe, Eleanor Watrous and Dorothy Moister.

Burial will be private in the Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.
