Gordon was raised in Michigan. He graduated from high school in 1941 and had plans to attend the University of Michigan and play baseball. In the summer of 1941, he had a tryout as a pitcher with the Detroit Tigers. However, his dreams of attending college and playing baseball were interrupted by WWII. He worked at the Willow Run Bomber plant in Ypsilanti, MI prior to enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1943. Gordon served as a B-24 pilot in the Army Air Corps from 1943-1945 in World War II. He flew B-50’s in the Air Force from 1951-1953 during the Korean War. He also was a pilot for the Air Force Reserves from 1951-1959.
Gordon completed his college education after World War II. He earned a B.S. degree in Economics from New Mexico State University. Gordon met his future wife, Nina, who was teaching at the University. Gordon and Nina married in 1951, and remained together until her death in 2013. They spent most of their married lives in New Mexico and California, where they raised their boys. Gordon worked for Sandia Laboratories in Albuquerque from 1959-1968. Gordon later was promoted with Sandia and moved to the facility in Livermore, California and worked there from 1968-1980.
Gordon and Nina both retired in 1980 and spent their early years of retirement traveling in their RV, visiting their many friends and family all over the country. They moved to Bethel Retirement Community in 2009. Gordon was involved in many of the Bethel activities, enjoyed family activities and visits, photography, computers, and was a lifelong sports fan of the Michigan Wolverines, Detroit Lions, and Tigers.
Burial will be at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery on Friday, September 8th at 10:30 AM. A Memorial service will be held at the Bethel Retirement Community in Modesto at 10:00 AM on Saturday, September 9th.
