Marion Wesley Silvey, Jr., 82, of Yates Center, KS, passed away Wednesday morning, August 30, 2017, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.Marion was born September 18, 1934, in Vernon, Woodson County, Kansas, the son of Marion W. Silvey, Sr. and Lua V. Vincent Silvey.He spent his childhood in the Vernon neighborhood and attended rural school before graduating from Yates Center High School.On September 12, 1955, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served in the states and in the Philippines. It was during this time in the Navy that he and Patricia Ann Schuster were married on January 26, 1958, in the Baptist Church in Yates Center.On September 11, 1959, he was given an Honorable Discharge from the Navy. He and Pat lived in Wichita before buying a farm near Yates Center. The farm home burned down and on January 8, 1964, Marion re-enlisted in the Navy. He was again discharged on December 7, 1967, and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.He and his family returned to Yates Center and Marion farmed and raised livestock for a number of years. He also was employed as a heavy equipment operator for KDOT for ten years until his retirement in 1999.He was a member of the New York Valley Church of God in Yates Center and was a long-time member of Woodson Post #13, American Legion.He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Burton Silvey; and a sister, Lila Driskill.He leaves Pat, his wife of more than 59 years; his children, Shyrell Jones and husband Robert, Iola, KS, Gregory Silvey, Yates Center, and Shawna Lenard and husband William, Yates Center; eight grandchildren, Mandy, Emily, T. J., Alisha, Duane, Jessica, Jacob, and Sierra; seventeen great-grandchildren; three brothers, Darrell Silvey and wife Paulette, Oxnard, CA, Larry Silvey and wife Susan, Millington, TN, and Duane Silvey and wife Edie, Oak Harbor, WA; a number of nieces and nephews; many other relatives and friend.Marion loved his God, family, friends, and neighbors. He will be greatly missed.Graveside services will be held 10:30 A.M. Saturday, September 2, 2017, at Yates Center Cemetery, with military honors by Woodson Post #13, American Legion.
