Professional Football Player. For nine seasons (1960 to 1968), he played at the defensive back (left-cornerback) position in the National Football League with the Baltimore Colts. Born Robert Dean Boyd, he was a multi-sport athlete during his years at Garland High School in Texas. After enrolling at the University of Oklahoma, he continued his athletic accomplishments for the school's football squad under Hall of Fame coach Bud Wilkinson. Boyd, who played at the quarterback, defensive back and return specialist positions contributed to Oklahoma's capturing of two Big Eight Conference titles (1958 and 1959). Selected by the Baltimore Colts during the 10th round of the 1960 NFL Draft, he totaled 121 career regular season games. He experienced an appearance in the NFL Championship Game in 1964 (Cleveland defeated Baltimore in the title game). During the course of his career, he established himself as a takeaway threat, as he totaled 57 interceptions. In 1965, he led the league with 9 interceptions, for which matched his career-high total of 9 he produced in 1964. Additionally, he earned Pro-Bowl honors twice (1964 and 1968) and All-Pro status three-times (1964, 1965 and 1968). He contributed to Baltimore's capturing of the NFL Title in 1968 for which resulted in an appearance in Super Bowl III (1969) with the New York Jets upsetting the favored Colts. After retiring as a player, he remained in the sport and served as a coach, initially for Don Shula and later Don McCafferty. Boyd was on staff when Baltimore won Super Bowl V (1971).
