She was born May 5, 1906, in Belvidere, the daughter of Everett and Nellie Hanna (Wagner) Bogardus. On Aug. 24, 1939, she married Clyde Wesley Bates on her parents' farm near Belvidere.
She was a schoolteacher in McHenry County and taught at the Oak Grove School near Harvard. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Harvard. She attended Whitewater University and was known for her afghan crocheting and beautiful needlepoint. Her greatest love was her family.
Surviving are her husband of Belvidere; two sons, Gordon (Nancy) Bates of Rockford and Wesley Bates of Memphis, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Henry and Hugh Bogardus.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the service at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 13, in the Saunders & McFarlin Funeral Home in Harvard. The Rev. Jeff Borgerson will officiate.
Interment will be private.
