Marilyn Ann Hankins left her earthly family to be with Our Lord in her heavenly home on June 18, 2014. She was born in Newark, NJ on January 21, 1932, to the late Fortunata and Julius Dobos. During her high school years, she met the love of her life and future husband, Paul W. Hankins, at a church dance. On June 1, 1952, they were married. During their 62 years of marriage they raised six children, eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Marilyn enjoyed cooking and decorating for family gatherings and events. She also had amazing fashion sense and was always in style. She would never leave the house unless she was dressed to a "T." Appearance and cleanliness were important to her both personally and in her home. Marilyn and Paul spent many summer vacations at the New Jersey shore. Child after child learned to "surf the waves" with Paul, while Marilyn watched happily from the beach. She was a beach beauty only. Standing up to her waist in the Atlantic Ocean was about the extent of her water activities. Then, while in her mid thirties, Paul's job transferred them to Toledo where she took her first official swim lesson along with her younger children. Once her face hit the water she was hooked. Marilyn continued on to become a lifeguard, water aerobics and swim instructor for the West Toledo YMCA. In addition, she taught summer swim classes for children and adults in Ottawa Hills. She gave individual instruction as well. Marilyn thought everyone should learn to swim. She especially encouraged adults saying, "you're never too old to learn" using herself as an example. She enjoyed researching new music and moves for her water aerobics classes and encouraged all adults to keep moving. Marilyn loved her work, her students and her co-workers. She savored the camaraderie that came with it. Marilyn taught for 34 years until May 2013 when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She planned to return to her teaching as soon as she "got a little stronger." Marilyn and Paul loved to travel. They traveled extensively within the 50 states with their children and later traveled as a couple to such destinations as Italy, Ireland and the Holy Land. Marilyn was an adventurous woman willing to try new experiences. She enjoyed biking, camping, white water rafting and cross country skiing just to name a few. While in her mid 50s she rode her first horse. At 60, she climbed the 50' vertical wall at the YMCA Storer Camps. She soared over the countryside in a hot air balloon and co-piloted a plane. Marilyn was a devout Catholic and an active member of Gesu Church. She was a minister of the Holy Eucharist and a member of the hospitality committee. Marilyn loved the Lord and His Blessed Mother Mary. She prayed the rosary daily and received the Holy Eucharist as often as she could. Along with her husband, Marilyn was a strong family and pro-life advocate. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Marilyn was always there for her husband and children. Family and extended family were extremely important to her. She was immensely important to us. Marilyn will be sorely missed but will live on in our hearts. Marilyn is survived by daughters, Kathleen Hankins, Annette H. Smith (Larry M. Smith), Teresa H. Johnson (Chris R. Johnson), Laura H. Sharp (Robert L. Sharp), and Eileen H. Decker (Scott K. Decker); grandchildren, Maria D. McWethy (Jessie McWethy), Renee T. Morhain (Christopher Morhain), SR Candice A. Smith USN, Marlo C. Smith (all of Alaska), Rachel Ann Johnson of Sylvania, Richard D. Schultz (of Gulfport, MS), Holly N. Schultz, AN Jennifer S. Schultz USN, Christina F. Schultz, Matthew K. Decker, and Erin E. Decker of Luna Pier, MI; great-grandchildren, Blake C. Schultz and Keith D. McWethy (of Alaska); brothers, Albert (Elaine) Dobos and Ronald (Cathy) Dobos; niece, Marlo Dobos and nephews, Steven Dobos, Ronald Dobos Jr. and John Scioscia Jr. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul on May 26, 2014; son, Daniel J. Hankins, and sisters, Adeline Scioscia and Antoinette Mitkus. Visitation and recitation of the Rosary, prayer service and funeral service were held in the Walker Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass was held at Gesu Roman Catholic Church, Toledo.
