NEWBERG HILLSBOROUGH - Alma Frances Graham Newberg, 93, of Efland, died Sunday, February 6, 2005. Born October 15, 1911, in Hillsborough, she is the last remaining child in a family of 16 born to James Daniel Graham and Tinie Burton Graham, of Cedar Grove. Only eight children survived beyond childhood. Predeceasing her are her parents, her stepmother, Mary Taylor Graham, and 15 siblings including brothers, Atlas, Archie, Aubrey, Arnold, Allan; and sisters, Annie Ruth and Alta; her husband, Otto Ernest Newberg: two sons, John Otto Newberg, and James Donald Moore, and a daughter, Louise Ellen Newberg Brinn. Surviving are her remaining children, Ruth N. (Wyman) Ferguson, of Durham, Kathleen F. Newberg, of Mebane, and Archibald T. (Carolyn) Newberg, of Mebane, her seven grandchildren including Matthew Ernest Graham Ferguson, of Durham, Gwendolyn Burton Brinn, of Wilmington, Vikki Leigh Newberg, of Pulaski, Va., and Sheila Newberg Farrell, of Burlington; and seven great-grandchildren; and her good friend, John Homola. A master gardener, she learned principles of horticulture early on her father's tobacco farm, picking tobacco worms of the plants when she was six years old. When she came in for supper, she was often too tired to eat, crawling under the dining room table to sleep, instead. She tended her own garden in Efland until she became unable to do so at 91. She was never a wealthy woman except in friends and in the value she placed on friendship and family. During spare times, she gardened to supplement the family's diet, adding tomatoes, corn, beans, and squash to summer lunches and dinners. Raised on pinto beans and biscuits, she often had a pot of beans simmering on her wood stove. She eschewed meat, and believed vegetables were more healthful, along with her favorite greens, those of the turnip. She spent many hours canning excess produce or giving it away to neighbors. Her life and home were never cluttered with 'things'. She got the most enjoyment from the simple pleasures: seeing the butter beans break through the crust of soil in spring, whiling away a summer afternoon underneath her father's giant oak tree, trading family news with her stepmother, chatting with her sister, Annie Ruth, a career military nurse, at the antique table in her dining room, attending church at Easter, and visiting her remaining brother, Atlas, and his wife prior to their deaths. Her life was a simple tribute to humor and courage. She believed in her oft-uttered adages that "There'll be a better day," and "You can get what you want; you just have to know what to want." She supported her neighbors and friends as they grew old and ill, and left her one by one. Her encouragement, optimism, and determination in the face of adversity, her unflagging dedication to work and achievement, and her open door, good will, and warm hospitality-and the good times gone-will be missed by her family and friends. Funeral services conducted by the Reverend Cindy Lister will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Efland United Methodist Church on Highway 70 in Efland where she was a long time member. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in Walker's Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements will be conducted by - Walker's Funeral Home.
