On May 5, 1903, he married Emma Louella Selzer. James was chief train dispatcher of the Chicago, Milwaukee & Saint Paul terminal in Chicago at the time of his death. He died from black diphtheria/plague. His funeral was at Saint Adalbert's Catholic Church in Chicago and he is buried in their cemetery. He and his wife Emma had six children: Catherine (Henry Law), Earl (Ethel), Frank (Mildred), John (Martha), Joseph (Mary), and Evelyn (John Donnelly).
