Edmund Tyrell Artis came from Swelfin, Suffolk, and began his adult life as a chocolate-maker. He soon found interest in various studies including art, archaeology and palaeontology, but is best known as an antiquarian. During his palaeontology period, he study Carboniferous plant fossils in Yorkshire and Derbyshire. The fossil genus Artisia C. Presl was named in his honour. His collection of specimens are in the holdings of The Natural History Museum.
He began his antiquarian study in Castor where he combined Roman archeology and his artistic abilities when he searched the grounds of St. Kyneburgha church, where his "artistic license" was applied. The Channel 4 series "Time Team" created a program in 2011 (Series 18, Episode 6) that features his work there.
