Dale William Howard was born December 16, 1953 in Ottawa, Kansas, the son of William “Rex” Howard and Mary (Sassaman) Howard. His birth was a highly anticipated event, a surprise who was welcomed with open arms. His sister, Sandi proclaimed he was her baby and was instrumental in his spoiling.

Dale was a near life-long resident of Ottawa. In 1970 he graduated from Ottawa High School. Dale spent a year at Wichita State, then changing career paths to join the United States Air Force. On May 25, 1973, Dale married Teri Lea (Mavity) Howard at the First United Methodist Church in Ottawa, Kansas. They enjoyed 44 years of marriage. Dale served in the Air Force Reserves, working at Forbes Air Force Base until it's closing in 1977. Leaving Topeka, Dale returned to Ottawa as a free lance carpenter.

In 1978 Dale worked construction, helping to build the Ottawa Water Plant. This proved prophetic, in as he later became employed at the plant, working for the City Of Ottawa. His career with the City of Ottawa was over a 27 year span- 1980- 2007. He rose to the position of Water Plant Supervisor, then later became Conservation Coordinator, which actually put him in charge of new city projects. His crowning achievement- as an overseer of projects -was the new sewer plant, state of the art, at that time. Many of his peers in the business recognized his knowledge and expertise in building water and sewer plants. Dale enjoyed his time with the city. In 1984 he was named employee of the year.

Dale enjoyed playing cards, meeting friends at the Elks, computer games, and his family. Never a “talker”, he preferred to “do” for his family. Dale was a regular jack of all trades. He could build, fix, paint, plumb, wire, and install anything. His granddaughters would bring their broken toys for him to fix. Even as he was getting sick, he worked on his shop, taking his time to put in insulation and light fixtures.

Survivors include: His wife, Teri, son Jacob William Howard and wife Alicia Howard of Ottawa, Kansas, son Jeffrey Dale Howard of Ottawa, Kansas, a sister, Sandi Staneart of Ottawa, Kansas, a brother Rex Howard of Leawood, two granddaughters, Riley Jo Howard and Lilly Marie Howard.

Dale was a faithful husband, good father, and loving grandfather. He was a man of few words, preferring to show his love in actions and deeds. He met his illness on his own terms, with humor and strength. His family will miss his wry humor, his generosity, and his quiet love for his family and friends. Rest in peace Dale Howard
