AT Texas A & M University on 02 January 1922, Gill was a student working in the press box during a football game against Centre College. As the game proceeded, The Aggies were down to their last 11 players. Coach Dana X. Bible knew that Gill was a former football player now on the basketball team. Coach called Gill from the stands, had him suit up and stand ready to enter the game when needed. A & M went on to win 22 to 14 without Gill ever entering the game.

Because Gill stood ready to help his team, the tradition of the 12th Man was born that is observed until the present time. At all Texas A & M games, the entire student body stands for the whole game, ready to enter and play if called on.

A statue of E. King Gill stands at the entrance to Kyle Field on the Texas A & M campus honoring this former student's spirit of readiness for service.
