Ernst, son of Hubert Stroeder and Agnes Ruetz, was born on 28 January 1836 in Dahlem, Schleiden, Rhineland, Prussia. He was baptized on 29 January 1836 in Kronenburg, Schleiden, Rhineland, Prussia. Ernst's death record incorrectly has the birth date as 26 January 1836. One census lists him as Ernst J., but no source expands on the middle name. Since he has a son named John, a son named Joseph, and a grandson named Ernst Jacob, each of those names is a possibility.

Ernst, along with his parents and siblings, "...likely arrived in New York June 2nd 1853 on the ship Adeline."(The German-French Catholic Settlers of Waterloo County by Robert Widen) The family originally settled in Carrick Township, Bruce, Canada West.

On 14 September 1858, Ernst Stroeder (age 22) married Catherine Lambertus (age about 17-18), daughter of George Lambertus and Maria Eva Stoertz, at St. Francis Xavier Church in Carlsruhe, Bruce, Canada West. After their marriage, they settled on a farm in Carrick Township where they lived in a log home. Their children were:

1) Maria Eva, born about 1860; died 16 February 1898. Married John Paul Hoffarth.
2) Apollonia, born about 1862; died 27 April 1884. Nun.
3) Joseph, born 28 March 1863; died 3 September 1935.
4) John, born 5 July 1864; died 26 January 1932.
5) Anna, born 10 April 1866; died 4 October 1927. Married Anthony Lobsinger.
6) Regina, born 1871; died 20 October 1894.
7) Unnamed Baby, born 31 March 1877; died same day.

On 24 May 1881, after the death of his first wife, widower Ernst (age 45) married Catherine Eckensweiler (age 25), daughter of Nicholaus Eckensweiler and Maria Ament, at the Catholic church in Deemerton, Bruce, Ontario, Canada. Witnesses to this marriage were Joseph Lambertus (brother of Ernst's 1st wife) and Joseph's wife, Catherine Wagner. Their children were:

1) Caroline Mary, born 5 February 1882.
2) Alexander, born 23 November 1882.
3) Noah J., born 14 January 1892.

Ernst died from heart failure on 4 July 1910 in Brant Township, Bruce, Ontario, Canada. He is buried at Walkerton Cemetery alongside his 2nd wife and his daughter, Regina.
