James was the son of the late Thomas Simpson and Anna Cleo Yeary Gulley.

He was a charter member of Chester Avenue Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, George William Gulley, Eugene "Red" Gulley, Pete Gulley, Floyd "Hunk" Gulley and Orville Gulley and sister, Shirley Gulley Hensley.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carolyn Ball Gulley, daughters, Angela Gulley, JoAnna (Jeff) Gulley Edds and Jacqueline (Jamie) Asher Smith; son, James "Jimmy" Gulley Jr.; grandchildren, Jeffrey Edds, Lance Asher, Jessica Edds, Rachael Asher and Jessica Edds; step grandchildren, Stephanie Rogers Winnett and Shayla Sanderson-Smith, step great grandchildren, Morgan and RJ Winnett; sister, Sue Yoakum; brothers, Boyd Lee Gulley, Carl "Cotton" Gulley, Everett "Mamaw" Gulley and Otis Gulley.
