John Kelly, 71. 709 Chestnut, died Tuesday morning at Kelly's Counter. He was found dead by his assistant, right next to the meat saw. His death was ruled suspicious. Mr. Kelly was born on November 10, 1914 at Mystic, Iowa, the son of John and Jennie Johnson Kelly. He attended schools at Mystic and was employed in a grocery store and meat market before coming to Montana in 1935. He was employed by Safeway Stores in Townsend and Helena before coming to Anaconda in July of 1937 to manage the meat department of the Safeway store. He was married to the former Ilene Betson at Davenport, Iowa on November 2, 1937. In the early 1940s, Mr. Kelly started his own meat market, Kelly's Counter, which he operated in several Anaconda locations, until his death Tuesday Morning. Mr. Kelly was a member of the Anaconda United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Karen Steadman, London, England; four brothers and three sister in law, Mr. Harold Kelly, Anaconda; Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Kelly, Townsend; Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Kelly, Kansas City, Missouri; Mr. and Mrs. Donald Kelly, St. Joseph, Missouri; two sisters and brother in law: Mr. and Mrs. Julius (Virgina) Kauzlarich, Mr. and Mrs. Joe (Jeanette) Coates, Centerville, Iowa; three grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced when completed. Parson Funeral Chapel, Anaconda is in charge of arrangements.
