Gwendolyn (Gwen) Coffield was a lifetime resident of Lyttonsville and spent her entire adult life in service to her community.
Ms. Coffield was active in the Lyttonsville Civic Association and was one of the primary forces in the planning and development of Friendly Gardens Apartment Complex and the redevelopment of the community single-family homes. She was the founder and the first coordinator of the Rosemary Hills Community School, a position she held from 1970 until her death. Ms. Coffield instituted the Foreign Students Center Program, adult education programs, political forums, and informational meetings on issues from crime prevention to health education. In the 1970’s the school was designated a Model Community School for the State of Maryland.
Ms. Coffield’s heart and soul was in the many years of dedicated service and leadership that she provided to enrich the lives of her neighbors. Her legacy is carried on through the wide variety of activities and programs at the Gwendolyn E. Coffield Community Center, which was dedicated to her memory on September 16, 2000, by County Executive Douglas Duncan to honor her enduring commitment to the community.
