William R. Allen was the son of Washington Matherson Allen and Hannah Chapman.Death certificate lists parents as Mat. Allen and Hanner Chapman. Washington M. Allen and Hannah M.Chapman were married in Gilmer County, Georgia on 6 Aug 1844. Marriage is recorded in Gilmer County Marriage Book 1 Page 18. Washington Materson Allen died sometime between 1849 and 1860. Matherson Allen is listed in self-protection group in the Boardtown District of Gilmer County, Georgia in 1849. No census record has been found for him or his wife Hannah in 1850. Hannah is found in the 1860 census in Gilmer County, Georgia living with her 4 children(William R, John Burton, Henson and Elizabeth Allen). She is listed as a widow. Hannah is believed to have died sometime in 1869. There is an Inventory record in the Gilmer County Loose Papers file in the Georgia Archives dated 25 May 1869 for the Orphans of Washington M. and Hannah Allen. In 1870, daughter Elizabeth Allen is living in the home of her uncle, Fields Chapman, and son Henson Allen, is living in the home of Henry and Rebecca Watkins. These are the parents of Charity Watkins who married their uncle, William Allen, Jr. Hannah Chapman was the daughter of Henson Chapman and Unity Bullin.
