Seward Edgar Steedley, 87, (b. 12 Mar 1916), of Nahunta, died Tuesday (16 Jul 2002) at his residence after a long illness with his family by his side. He was of the Baptist faith and had worked as a boilermaker with Babcock and Wilcox in Brunswick, and had also farmed for many years.
The Clinch County native was the son of the late William Randall Steedley and Rosa Lee Smith Steedley. He was also preceded in death by his son, Julian Edgar Steedley; eight sisters, and three brothers.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Mae Harris Steedley of Nahunta. (They were married on 26 Sep 1936); his children, Merle Scarborough (Glenn) of Nahunta, Ann Prescott (Coleman) of Jacksonville, FL, Jeanette Cato (Buddy) and Jimmy Steedley (Diane), both of Nahunta; ten grandchildren, Anna O'Neal, Richie Westmoreland, Brian and Ronda Steedley, Eric, Alan and Chris Prescott, Clifford Steedley, Amanda Gibson and Michelle Quinnelly; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and 12 step-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other relatives; and a very special friend, Jody Vounce.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 19, from the chapel of the Chambless Funeral Home in Nahunta with the Rev. Randy Wainright and Rev. Edward Colley officiating. Burial followed in the Little Buffalo Cemetery in Hickox.
Songs, "Amazing Grace," "I'll Fly Away," and "Golden Street."
Grandsons served as pallbearers.
