Professional Hockey Player, Coach. For fourteen seasons (1952 to 1953, 1954 to 1955, 1956 to 1957, 1957 to 1958 and 1960 to 1969), he played at the center position in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins and Minnesota North Stars. Born Calvin Parker MacDonald, he made an impression early in his career with the Toronto Marlboros, when he topped the 30-goal mark for three consecutive seasons (1950 to 1953). However, following his promotion to the NHL during the 1952-1953 season, it would take several years to establish himself. During the 1954-1955 season while with Toronto, he saw his playing time increase to 62 games and after he was acquired by the New York Rangers, he appeared in 70 games in 1957-1958. After joining the Detroit Red Wings, he was the benefactor of a top-notch scoring line for which included Gordie Howe, Alex Delvecchio and Ted Lindsay, as MacDonald produced a career-high 33-goals during the 1962-1963 season. He was acquired by the Minnesota North Stars during the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft and had the distinction of being on Minnesota's roster during their inaugural season. In 676 career regular season games, he compiled 144 goals, with 179 assists. After retiring as a player, he remained in the sport to serve as a Minor League coach. He returned to the NHL level and served as head coach of the Minnesota North Stars during the 1973-1974 season and the Los Angeles Kings during the 1981-1982 season.
