Eleanor Gwenlian Gates Howell 81, beloved wife of Robert W. Howell Sr., died Saturday, August 1, 2015 at Beverly Hospital surrounded by 4 generations of family and dear friends, who sang over her beautiful hymns and harmonies.

Raised and educated in Worcester, she was the daughter of the late Edgar G. and Bernice A. (Stearns) Gates. She moved to Beverly in 1955 where she made a home with Bob as they raised their 6 children and continued on to give their love to 9 foster children.

Ellie was an active and longtime member of the North Shore Community Baptist Church in Beverly Farms where she had served as a Deaconess, as a member of the choir, and played cello for their worship services. For decades, Christian Women’s club was a place where she fueled her passion for Jesus.

God gifted Eleanor with an artistic and creative hand. She used that gifting to make unique quilts for her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed membership with her daughter Becky at the Crossroads Quilters Club.

Mrs. Howell dedicated her life to her family and raising her children. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, Nana, great Nana, foster mother and friend who will, without a doubt, be deeply missed by those whose lives she touched.

In addition to her husband with whom she shared sixty three beautiful years of marriage, she is survived by three daughters, Becky Hartley and her husband, Michael, Kathryn Rusconi and her husband, James and Christine Messarra and her husband, Andrew, three sons, Robert W. Howell Jr. and his wife, Amy, Jonathan D. Howell and his wife, Julie and Timothy S. Howell, sixteen grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, a brother, Edgar Glenn Gates, numerous nieces and nephews and nine foster children. She was also the sister of the late Erma Forrest, Audrey Bly, Shirley Hobby and Edrie Cawley.
