Wilbert Henry “Joe” Saboury of Centreville, MD died at his home on Saturday August 19, 2017 he was
76.

Born on June 11, 1941 he was the son of the late Wilbert Henry Saboury and Evelyn Hungerford. Joe was raised by his maternal grandparents the late George and Mary Hungerford in Lusby, MD. He grew up on the family tobacco farm where he found an appreciation for a full day of work. With these personal life lessons about perseverance Joe would graduate from the Calvert County High School, turning down a collegiate soccer scholarship to enlist in the United States Marines. Serving from 1960 to 1966 at the beginning of the Vietnam War he attained the rank of Corporal and was instrumental in training Expeditionary Infantry Marines on new firearms weaponry for combat. Joe was deployed with Expeditionary Marine forces in the Bay of Pigs invasion. In January of 1965 he married his sweetheart Barbara Anne Steele, of Wheaton, MD, after meeting at Cove Point Beach in Lusby, MD. Together they built a life that started in Greenbelt, MD. During Joe’s time in Greenbelt he was a volunteer firefighter with the Greenbelt Volunteer Fire Department where he earned the rank of Captain before relocating his family to the Eastern Shore; in 1980 he moved to Hebron MD, finally settling in 1981 in Centreville, MD. He learned the trade of pipe fitting as a journeyman and would spend 30 years with Washington Terminal Company and Amtrak. Joe was a great fit for Amtrak with his Marine background, he was well respected as he was promoted as a General Manager at Union Station where he was regarded and known as “General Joe”, supervising over 100 employees. Joe’s dedication to his profession and natural leadership were backed by action where he would not use a single sick day during his 30 years of employment at Amtrak, until his retirement in 2006. During retirement, he was always happiest with his family as he loved to travel with his beloved wife to many day destinations and especially annually to their family retreat in Chincoteague, VA.
