Helen Reilly Barbour Andrews,Harland late of Phoenix Lodge, Dunmurry, County Antrim. At time of passing, she was a resident of 16 Adelaide Park near Windsor. Belfast, North Ireland. She was the youngest daughter of John Doherty Barbour and Elizabeth Law Milne. Her father operated a flourishing Linen business in Lisburn, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland named Messrs. Wm. Barbour & Sons, Ltd. Helen Barbour married shipbuilder & Managing director of Harland & Wolff shipyards, Thomas Andrews Jr. on June 23rd 1908. after a honeymoon trip to Switzerland, the couple took up residence at "Dunallan," at 12 Windsor Ave, Belfast. They had one child, Elizabeth Law Barbour Andrews, born on 27 November 1910. She was nicknamed "ELBA" by her father. Thomas, along with his Guarantee group, were sent along on the maiden voyage of Titanic to study & report & make notes to any changes that should take place on the vessel. Sadly, Thomas, along the entire Harland & Wolff "Guarantee Group" perished in the sinking. Thomas was last seen in the First Class Smoking Room unresponsive to repeated pleas that he try to save himself. His body was never recovered. Unfairly, Thomas & Helen had less than four years together as man and wife. Helen and little Elba were present at the dedication of the Thomas Andrews Memorial Hall in Comber at which time she gave a short speech of thanks. On February 8th, 1917 Helen married Henry Pierson Harland. Henry had been appointed to premium apprentice at Harland & Wolff shipyard in 1893. He studied maritime affairs in China & returned to Belfast in 1910.
Helen had three daughters & one son by Henry. Albert being born first, Evelyn, Louisa, & Ethel Vera. Henry became involved with Northern Ireland politics, was elected to the Belfast Unionist party in 1935, unopposed. The Harlands occupied Otterspool House on the banks of the River Colne. Aldenham, Watford. In 1944 the Harlands moved to Radlett where Henry later died in 1945 aged 69 years.
Helen died of mitral valve complications on 22 August, 1966. At which time she was living in Belfast ironically not very far from the Windsor Avenue home she once shared with husband Thomas Andrews.
Elba went on to become the first woman ever to receive a pilot's license in Northern Ireland. She helped in the war effort & later worked closely with the giraffes in Kenya. On her way home on 1 November 1973 Elba was killed in a car accident approximately half way between Dublin and Slane. Her ashes may be found in the church yard in Comber and at the Barbour Family vault at Lambeg. Helen "Nellie" is survived by her daughter, Ethel Vera Helen, by Henry Harland.
