Thomas Jefferson Shelton was born and raised in La Grange, Tennessee. He was an attorney and practiced law in that area. As a young man, he was publisher and editor of the "La Grange Monitor" newspaper for a short time during 1859-1860. He was Mayor of La Grange during the 1870s. In the 1900 census, Thomas Jefferson was not enumerated with his spouse thus lending some credibility to family lore concerning possible domestic problems. Yet Thomas Jefferson's obituary in the "Arkansas Democrat" newspapers states that "he leaves a devoted wife, three sons and one daughter to mourn his loss." Thomas married Matilda Rawlings Milliken 22 February 1864 in Fayette County, Tennessee. Know issue from this union: William H., George P., Leon Milliken, Thomas Junius, Julia Moody and Marietta “Marie” Shelton [Mrs. Shelby T. Jabine].
