Daughter of the late Anna Assini Lombard, Mary D. Lombard Caniano resided in Loudonville and was a communicant of St. Pius X Church.
Mrs. Caniano attended the College of St. Rose and Russell Sage College. Since 1955, Mary dedicated her life to volunteer service, advocacy and leadership to the Albany County Association for Retarded Citizens. For over 20 years, she served as President of the Board of Directors of this organization. In September 1989, her achievements were recognized by naming the new facility on Krumkill Road in her honor, The Mary L. Caniano Center. She served as first vice-president for the New York State Association for Retarded Citizens. Mary was awarded many honors in recognition of a lifetime devoted to the developmentally disabled, including the Four Chaplains Award. She was the wife of the late James J. Caniano; mother of Donna A. Caniano, M.D. of Columbus, Ohio and Barbara Mary Caniano of Schenectady; sister of the late Michael D. Lombard; aunt of Peter L. Poleto of Delmar; two great-nephews and several cousins also survive.
