Michael Austin Wagnon, beloved son, grandson, brother, uncle, and friend, died unexpectedly August 16, 2017 at the age of 28.

Michael is survived by his parents, Vivian Faye Highsmith and William Glyn Wagnon; his grandmother, Martha Faye Highsmith; his great-aunt, Vivian Raye Steele; his sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Chris Ryland and nephew Glyn; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Hughell Glyn and Rosalie Jean Wagnon, and his maternal grandfather Thomas Edward Highsmith.

Michael was born on September 27, 1988 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. He graduated from Magnet Cove High School and Hawaii Pacific University with a degree in History. His deep love of history took him around the world; he walked the beaches of Normandy, experienced the ancient beauties of Cambodia, spent time exploring Jerusalem, and stopping at all places in between. His stories and pictures from his travels entertained and enriched the lives of many.

Michael was an accomplished musician who played many instruments well. He specialized in the bassoon and played in the Arkansas Youth Symphony Orchestra in high school. His music also took him to New York City to play in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2006. He carried his talents into college, playing both bassoon and tenor saxophone with Hawaii Pacific University.

In addition to his love of history and music, Michael was an accomplished scuba diver and adventure seeker. He and his family enjoyed countless dive trips to remote corners of the globe. Michael shared his love of diving by becoming a Master Diver and Cave Diver and introducing many to the sport.

As an avid animal lover, Michael rescued a dog from a local pound. Eventually, he trained his beloved pet to be a Service Dog. He loved Michael dearly. His name is Beau.

Michael’s talents and skills are too numerous to list, as are the names of his friends and all the lives he touched. Tragedy knows no reason. Michael will be deeply mourned by many—more than he could ever have imagined.

A graveside service is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 21st at Lost Creek Cemetery in Sheridan, Arkansas.
