June 2006 – Passage. Geraldine Self Gerrard, 82, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend passed away peacefully at her home in Salt Lake City, UT, late Thursday, June 29, 2006, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born November 13, 1923, in Wattis, UT, to David Anthony and Virgia Mae Trauntvein Self, the first and only girl, and twin to her brother, David. She grew up in this small coal mining town, spending the younger years of her life in Spring Canyon, UT. She graduated from Carbon High School in 1942, and went on to attend LDS Business College receiving her Associates Degree in Business. She was talked into attending a missionary reunion for Leo Stevens Gerrard by some friends and while there received a strong spiritual impression that she would marry him. They were married on December 22, 1944, in New York City, NY. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on July 11, 1945.
She was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, and a faithful member of the LDS Church where she held many callings over the years. She was often called upon to teach Genealogy Research classes due to her vast knowledge and love for it. Her genealogy research spanned her entire life. She spent hours upon hours researching, compiling, and documenting her family's ancestors. She even traveled to England on one occasion to glean what information she could from the boroughs, churches, and cemeteries. People from all over the U.S. often called her for research advice and help. She received spiritual help on more than one occasion which helped her find a missing ancestor of family link. She knew the Lord had called her to do this special work and felt the Lord's hand guiding her every step of the way.
Mom was a hard worker, very loving and compassionate, and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three of her five children, son, Lynn; daughter, Joan; and just recently her daughter, Julie Marie Urie; and her loving husband, Leo. Survived by her two children, Linda Mae (Rick) Schriner, SLC, UT; David Self (Karen) Gerrard, Clearfield, UT; and brothers, David Anthony (Brenda) Self, Charleston, Indiana; Art (Barbara) Self, Seattle, Washington; Son-In-Law, Wayne Urie; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Special thanks to First Choice Hospice Nurse Mindy, and Nurse's Aid, Martha, who provided kind, compassionate service. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 7, 2006, at 12 noon, in the East Millcreek 7th Ward, 3408 South Celeste Way (3120 East). Friends may call at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East S. Temple, Thursday, July 6, 2006, 6 to 8 p.m., and Friday, at the Ward Chapel, one hour prior to services. Interment: Salt Lake City Cemetery.
