The daughter of the late Lewis Milford and Mary Louise Cox Sledd, Mrs. Mills was born in Columbus, MS on March 18, 1923. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from Mississippi State College for Women and a Master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Alabama. She was employed for several years as the Librarian at Caledonia High School. After receiving her Master’s degree, she taught Library Science at Mississippi University for Women until she retired. She was also the first Lowndes County Library System's Bookmobile Librarian. She also started and organized the library at Main Street Presbyterian Church of which she was a member. She was also a member of the Pioneer Society, the Bernard Romans Chapter of the DAR and Beta Phi MU, librarians’ sorority. In addition to her parents and her step-father Ed Chapman, she was predeceased by her sister Katharine “Betsy “Drane, brother Milford Sledd and her husband Arthur “Sarge” Mills.
She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law Arthur Lewis and Silvia Mills and James Edward Mills, her niece Kathy McCoy (Mike), two great nieces and her special friend and caregiver Sissy McCoy, all of Columbus.
Pallbearers will be Chris Doughty, Randy Doughty, Mike Cranford, Lonnie Harris, Paul Swain and Mike McCoy. Honorary pallbearer will be Jacky Triplett.
