US Senator. Born in Jefferson County, Kentucky, he studied law and moved to Charleston, Indiana in 1812. He moved to Jackson, Missouri, in 1818, practiced law and also engaged in agricultural pursuits. He served as circuit attorney for the Cape Girardeau District, president of the Missouri State constitutional convention in 1820 and as member of Missouri State Senate, (1822-26). In 1831, he was elected to the United States Senate and served until his death at age 48 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
