Gay A. Witte-Johnson
January 27, 1966 -- August 8, 2017
Never tell an overachiever they can't do something.
Gay Ann Witte-Johnson spent a lifetime proving the truth of that statement. Unfortunately, there was one challenge Gay could not quite overcome. Despite a valiant battle with melanoma, Gay died Aug. 8, 2017. She was 51.
Gay Ann Witte was born Jan. 27, 1966 in St. Louis to Edward and Sandra Witte, the second of their three children. Told by a school counselor that she was setting her sights too high with her aspirations to become a dentist, Gay only redoubled her efforts to prove the counselor wrong. Gay graduated top of her class at Hancock High School in 1984, then attended Saint Louis University, playing basketball for the Billikens for two years and earning a degree in Medical Technology in 1988.
In the fall of 1986, she met Sean Peter Johnson during a welcome back event on the SLU campus. The two were married May 26, 1990 and celebrated 27 anniversaries together.
After earning her undergraduate degree, Gay worked for a year as a microbiologist at St. Louis University Hospital. In the fall of 1989, she began studying dentistry at the University of Missouri – Kansas City, earning her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1993. She passed her board examinations that same spring and began practicing in the Kansas City area.
In late 1997, Gay and Sean moved to Wisconsin, and in the spring of 1998, she purchased a practice in Appleton, Wis., renaming it Johnson Family Dental. She moved her practice to Greenville, Wis., in 2006, and practiced there until her medical retirement in 2017.
During that same time, Gay and Sean also started a family, welcoming Joshua Robert Johnson, a senior at Missouri Science & Technology, on June 25, 1996; and Noah Edward Johnson, a high school senior at St. Mary Catholic, on Aug. 1, 2000.
An avid sports fan, she relished the opportunity to watch her boys compete, and even coached basketball on several occasions to share her knowledge of the game. She was a well-known soccer mom on the sidelines, recognized for both her passion and knowledge of the game. Gay also loved to travel and explore new places, and was just as comfortable attending the theater or ballet as she was on the sidelines of a sports venue. She was also a fiercely loyal friend to many.
Gay was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Sandra. She is survived by her husband, Sean; sons Josh and Noah; brother Steve Witte and his wife Jill; her sister Elizabeth Ude; her nieces Emma Witte, Meghan Ude, Anna Witte, Rachel Ude and Rebecca Witte; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
