AUGUSTA "GUSSIE" TIBBS WILLIAMS, 88, transitioned on Sunday, Aug. 13, 2017. Born Nov. 4, 1928, in Huntsville, Ala., she was a daughter of the late Dan Tibbs, Sr. and Pearl Etta Moore Tibbs. She graduated from Toney High School, Toney, Ala.; and in 1950, proudly received her B.A. in secondary education from Alabama A & M. Later relocating to Fort Wayne where she united in holy matrimony with the late Robert Williams. She was an American trailblazer being one of the first two African - Americans hired by GTE. She advanced from switchboard operator to a supervisor and regional trainer. Upon retirement, she returned to her first love of teaching by becoming a classroom assistant with F.W.C.S. She served the community through various civic and community organizations, and as a devoted member of Pilgrim Baptist Church. Augusta leaves to honor and cherish her memory her four children, Hollis Hayden Sr., Debra Faye Williams-Robbins, Daryl Williams Sr., and Robert "Fritz" Williams Sr.; 32 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Booker, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. A celebration of life is 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017, at Pilgrim Baptist Church, 1331 Gay St. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18, 2017, at the church. Arrangements by Ellis Funeral Home.
