Martin Elmo Ankerson was born March 8, 1923, on his parents’ farm south of Pollock. He was the youngest child born to Arndt and Elizabeth McCallum Ankerson and joined an older sister, Minnie, and brother, Arthur. He grew up on the farm and attended Hillside Country School through the 8th grade. He began farming with his parents and took over sole operation of the farm when his father passed away in October 1952.

As the youngest child in the family, he was given the nickname of “Babe.” Family and friends continued to call him Babe, even well into his adult life. When it seemed like he might go through life as a confirmed bachelor, he met a lady who had moved to Mound City in 1965 and was the owner of the Friendly Tavern there. Romance blossomed, and Martin and Marian Hoagland were married on May 1, 1971. With the marriage, Martin gained an immediate family of one stepson, five stepdaughters, their spouses and a growing number of step-grandchildren. Martin and Marian continued to live on the farm south of Pollock. Marian passed away in January 1991.

Martin was a life-long farmer and a 35-year member of the Campbell County Crop Improvement Association. Along with the more traditional crops of spring wheat, oats, corn and alfalfa, he experimented with other grains, such as winter wheat and durum wheat, and also was one of the first farmers in the area to experiment with spraying some of his crops for weed control. He continued to farm until 1985, when his nephew, Orland Geigle, took over operation of the farm and cow-calf operation. Even after his retirement from full time farming, he continued to plant a large garden which was well known for, among other things, tomatoes, sweet corn, muskmelons and watermelons.

Family was very important to Martin, and he made several trips, along with his mother and later with sister Minnie to the west coast to visit McCallum relatives in Washington and California and Ankerson relatives in California and Arizona. After his marriage he and Marian also visited family in the west, including Montana and New Mexico, and they spent several Thanksgiving holidays with family in the Rapid City and Edgemont areas.

In the fall of 2006, Martin moved into Pollock. In October of 2012 he moved to the Good Samaritan Society-Herreid and in January of 2015 he moved to the Strasburg Care Center. He enjoyed playing a variety of games, and especially the card games of whist, pinochle and smear. He was a member of Pollock Lutheran Church.

Martin is survived by two nephews: Robert (Nancy) Geigle of Green Bay, Wis., and Orland (Waynette) Geigle of Pollock; one stepson, William (Joan) Robb of Dexter, N.M.; four stepdaughters: Carolyn (Harold) Kosel of Mound City, Marlene (Reldon) Doyle of Rapid City, and Pearl (Dick) Myrvik and Cherry Myrvik, both of Edgemont, S.D.; one great-nephew and two great-nieces: Shawn (Danielle) Geigle and family of Baltic, S.D., and Kristin (Russ) Schick and family and Danlyn (Jared) Vander Wal and family, all of Hazelton; 18 step-grandchildren and many great- and great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marian; sister and brother-in-law, Minnie (Oscar) Geigle; brother and sister-in-law, Arthur (Helen) Ankerson; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Peggy (Donald) Bockman; and step son-in-law, Dennis Myrvik.
