He was a Portuguese businessman. A controversial figure in Portuguese economic history of the 20th century, often cited as the richest man in the country, he had a fortune estimated at 1.3 billion euros and appeared on the list of billionaires of Forbes magazine in 2004, occupying the 153.ª position. He built his business empire during the Estado Novo dictatorship. This empire was nationalized by the Government of Vasco Gonçalves. He extended his business to Angola, Mozambique and Brazil, where he maintained another business empire, at the time when it was governed by a military dictatorship.
