Jane Ellen Light Mcilrath 75, died peacefully in her sleep the morning of March 7, 2014. She was born in Grinnell, Iowa, graduating from Brooklyn High School before attending the University of Iowa where she completed her BSN in 1960.
As a registered nurse, Jane loved supporting special needs babies, teaching mothers how to properly care for their fragile bundles. She retired from Mental Health Mental Retardation Infant Programs in 2000. During her 30 year career, she covered many facets of nursing but always returned to infant care.
As a military wife, Jane lived in many towns and cities across the U.S. One of her favorite assignments with her husband was a three year stay in Taranto, Italy, where she visited extensively throughout the region.
She and her husband ultimately settled in Houston, Texas where they raised two daughters. Jane was an avid reader. There was never a mystery she could pass up, particularly those of British intrigue.
She was a 57 year member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, an organization devoted to education, philanthropy and mentoring for young women. Like many women of her generation, during the '60s and '70s, her fashion sense was influenced by Jacqueline Kennedy. Jane was a well dressed, well groomed fashionista before the term was coined in pop culture.
Pets always held a special place in her heart. She adopted and rescued countless dogs and cats over time. Jane had her favorite foods. Chocolate Three Muskateers bars, any "stinky" cheese on a cracker and fried shrimp were her special flavors.
Surviving are her husband, Wallace "Mac;" brother Dr. H.L. Light M.D and his wife Rhea of Grinnell, Iowa; daughters Jennifer and Page; grandson Geoffrey; and many relatives and friends.
A celebration of a life well lived was held at Rolling Fork Club, 9110 Rodney Ray Blvd., Houston, Texas 77040.
