Beth Lacy Carson was born in Fuzhou, China on May 21, 1911 to Walter N. and Helen (Murdoch) Lacy, who were Methodist Missionaries there. Beth spent the first seventeen years of her life in China, where she attended Shanghai American School. Upon returning to the United States, she and her family lived in Shaker Heights, Ohio. She was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University and a member of Phi Mu Sorority. She did graduate work in journalism at Western Reserve University and was Society Editor of the Cleveland Press. She married Gordon B. Carson on June 19, 1937 at the Epworth Euclid Methodist Church. Beth was active in editing church newspapers in Cleveland, Portsmouth, and Columbus, Ohio, before moving to Midland, Michigan in 1977. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Midland. Beth was involved in several faculty women's groups at Case Institute of Technology and The Ohio State University, and she held numerous volunteer positions in the churches in each community in which they lived. She was a member of Mortar Board and AAUW.
