Obituary for Mary Agnes Dawson Gaylord
Mrs. Mary Agnes Dawson Gaylord went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ August 2, 2017. Born on the family farm in Trigg County, KY on Christmas Eve, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Almont and Agnes Belle Miller Dawson. Mary was 91 years old. For the past seven years she resided at Cypress Glen in Greenville, NC.
The funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 2:30 pm at the First Christian Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. A private burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery prior to the church service.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Richard W. Gaylord. They met in 1947 when he was traveling on the burley tobacco market. After marriage they made their home in Greenville. With Richard’s promotion to vice-president of Universal Leaf Tobacco Company, they relocated to Richmond, VA where they lived for eight years and then returned to Greenville. At the time of his death they had been married for 68 years.
Mary’s heart and life were her family and church. She was a long-time member of First Christian Church where she was active in the Christian Women’s Fellowship. She treasured her many friends in the Cosmos Book Club and her bridge club. Known for her culinary skills, Mary was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She will be missed for her gentle and kind nature.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Dawson Thomas; a brother, Almont Dawson, Jr.; and a granddaughter-in-law, Sydney Boone Gaylord.
Mary is survived by her children, Mont Dawson Gaylord (wife Elizabeth Stetson) of Greenville and Richard Warren Gaylord, Jr (wife Bonnie Webb) of Raleigh; seven grandchildren, Richard Warren Gaylord III (wife Katie Watson), Todd Webb Gaylord (wife Shannon McCorkle) , Bonner Gardner Gaylord (wife Ashley Barber) and Brittain Dawson Gaylord (wife Elizabeth King), Erin Reines Einbender, Bennett Stetson Einbender and Jaquelin Brooke Einbender; eleven great grandchildren, Vail Webb Gaylord, Mary Haven Gaylord, Carson Railing Gaylord, Boone Mathis Gaylord, Richard Warren (Ren) Gaylord IV, Katie Lee McKinnon Gaylord, Hazel Gardner (Gigi) Gaylord, Demetrius Webb (Demetri) Gaylord, Almont Barber Gaylord, Norvej King (Vey) Gaylord and Sydney Elizabeth Gaylord; a sister, Betsy Dawson Wall; a brother, Charles Fenton Dawson; and her sister-in-law and faithful friend, Virginia Gaylord Scales.
The family is especially grateful for the special care and friendship of the Silvercare and Cypress Glen caregivers.
